Deception detection
Fox’s drama “Lie to me” is a series about the science of lying. « Lie to me » is inspired by the scientific discoveries of Dr Paul Ekman who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose the truth and lies in criminal investigations.
Emotions
Developping your skills to enable you to read the true emotions in others will help you to build and maintain constructive and successful relationships. Dr Ekman’s contribution include the interpretation of the scientific research about compassion, altruism and peaceful human relations.
Paul Ekman
Paul Ekman is an american psychologist and is a professor of psychology. He was a pioneer in the study of emotions and their relation to the facial expressions (theory of the micro-expressions based on the study of a primitive group and their universal reactions towards pictures). In a recent study of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century, Ekman was listed among the top one hundred.
Ekman showed that facial expressions of emotion are not culturally determined, but universal (across human cultures).
Expressions he found to have universal facial expressions included those indicating anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise and contempt.
In a research project, Ekman reported on facial “micro-expressions” which could be used to assist in lie detection.
The methods developped by Paul Ekman are based on 40 years of research and are being taught to the FBI, CIA, Scotland Yard and more forensics specialists around the world.
Paul Ekman International plc and Detego Group will take this work forward and so we can contribute to a more emotionally aware, secure and compassionate world by making this work accessible to all.
Dr Ekman is scientific advisor to the FOX/SKY series, ‘Lie to Me’ which is a drama based around his work and experience.
This dramatisation of Paul Ekman’s work is dramatised through three extensive series, with Dr. Paul Ekman engaged by FOX as the Scientific Consultant throughout the production of the programme.
‘Lie to Me’ is inspired by the scientific discoveries of Dr Ekman who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose the truth and lies in criminal investigations.
“Dr Cal Lightman (played by Tim Roth) is the world’s leading deception expert. If you lie to Lightman, he’ll see it in your face and your posture or hear it in your voice. If you shrug your shoulder, rotate your hand or even just slightly raise your lower lip, Lightman will spot the lie. By analyzing facial expressions and involuntary body language, he can read feelings ranging from hidden resentment to sexual attraction to jealousy. His work gives him the knowledge and skill set to expertly deceive others as well as detect lies.” (www.fox.com/lietome).

Our core modules
Building on the life’s work of Dr Paul Ekman over the last 40 years, Detego Group under the license of Paul Ekman International plc has been established to make emotional skills and deception programmes accessible across Belgium and Luxembourg.
There are currently 2 main modules :
- Emotional Skills and Competencies (ESaC)
This three-day core programme centred on cutting edge behavioural science, that prepares people with the knowledge, skills and approaches to evaluate verbal and non-verbal communications from others.
It covers the knowledge, understanding, skills and application of emotional skills.
The course is designed to help you become aware of your own emotions (before they get you into trouble!), as well as read the true emotions in others to help you build and maintain constructive, successful relationships.
You will learn how to read facial expressions, plus the other four channels that we need to pay attention to in others if we really want to know what they are saying: body language, voice, verbal style and the actual words spoken/written.
You will practice and hone those skills in a safe environment with a Paul Ekman Approved Trainer.
A graded Certificate of Competence will be awarded to you on completion.
- Evaluating Truthfulness and Credibility (ETaC)
This is a four-day programme based on the same science, designed to develop a person’s ability to understand and manage their own emotions as well as the skill to recognize emotions in others so that they can understand and engage with them constructively.
It covers the psychological models behind truth and lies, plus the skills required to identify ‘Hotspots’ – instances when the strain between what we are thinking and what we are feeling produce observable/audible leakage across the five channels.
The course is designed to help you to read others and evaluate the degree of truthfulness and credibility in what they are communicating to you.
You will learn how to read facial expressions, plus the other four channels that we need to pay attention to in others if we really want to know what they are saying: body language, voice, verbal style and the actual words spoken/written. You will also learn about memory, and how you can work out whether a statement of an event is remembered or being constructed through scientific content analysis.
You will practice and hone those skills in a safe environment with a Paul Ekman Approved Trainer.
A graded Certificate of Competence will be awarded to you on completion.
